Anime Review #6: Nagi no Asukara

Nagi no Asukara

adapted from Nagi no Asukara by Maeda, Risou

Long ago, all humans lived in the ocean. But some who longed for the land abandoned the ocean, casting off the special raiments granted to them by the sea god to adapt them to life under the sea...

Though mankind was divided into sea dwellers and land dwellers, each with different ways of thinking, they were all still fellow humans, and they continued to maintain contact as time went on.

Sakishima Hikari, Mukaido Manaka, Hiradaira Chisaki, and Isaki Kaname live in an undersea village, while Kihara Tsumugu lives on land.

When these middle school second-year land and sea dwellers meet for the first time, their hearts begin to undulate like the tides.

The youthful fantasy tale of these young people's lives unfolds in a strange and beautiful world.

Story: 5/5

  • Nagi no Asukara takes place in a fantasy world where people originally came from the ocean. Because of people's curiosity, they discovered land, and decided to live there. The people who left the sea for the land lost their Ena, a protective layer of skin that helps them breathe underwater. After a long time, the population between land and water has been split, and they continue to live harmoniously.
  • The story revolves around four childhood friends: Chisaki Hiradaira, Hikari Sakishima, Kaname Isaki, and Manaka Mukaido. Their underwater school closed for some reason, which made them attend school on the surface. They were picked on in their new school because they're different from everybody else. They meet Tsumugu Kihara, and become good friends with him.
  • This story also tackles sacrifices and unrequited love.
Art: 5/5
  • The art is very fluid (no pun intended lol) and has vibrant colors.
  • Screencaps:

Characters: 5/5
  • Unlike typical romcom animes, Nagi no Asukara is actually unpredictable. One moment, the characters make moves indicating that s/he likes this particular person, but then another event happens which leads you to think that s/he likes this other person. You never really know who ends up with whom.
  • There was also an amazing development in their personalities. From the first few episodes, you can say that Hikari is an annoying brat who likes to pick fights with people on the surface, but on episodes 10 onwards, you will notice that he matured a lot. You can say the same for the other characters.
Sound: 5/5
  • The opening song really got me like whoa. That is some soothing-yet-not-so-soothing intro. Plus, the ending song was totally calming too.
  • The seiyuus of the characters really matched their character.
  • The sound effects and background music used were also bonuses too.
  • Usually, people skip the intro and ending songs of an anime, because they take time, but I swear that Nagi no Asukara's songs are really worth it.
Overall: 5/5

Recommendation(s):
  1. Ano Hana: both animes deal with sacrifice, heartbreak, friendship, and unrequited love :)
