Ravishing Reviews: Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

A Quick Introduction

Title: Eleanor and Park
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Publishing Date: 26th February 2013
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Number of Pages: 328

The Synopsis (by Goodreads)

Two misfits.
One extraordinary love.

Eleanor... Red hair, wrong clothes. Standing behind him until he turns his head. Lying beside him until he wakes up. Making everyone else seem drabber and flatter and never good enough...Eleanor.

Park... He knows she'll love a song before he plays it for her. He laughs at her jokes before she ever gets to the punch line. There's a place on his chest, just below his throat, that makes her want to keep promises...Park.

Set over the course of one school year, this is the story of two star-crossed sixteen-year-olds—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try.

The Review

I'm giving this ultra-mega-super-duper-freaking awesome novel 5 Vaporeons!!

I really liked this book because the story was so cute! I mean, Eleanor and Park's love was so innocent. There wasn't any hint of dirt.
The story starts when Eleanor moves back to the house of her stepdad. She was previously kicked out because of some reason, but she returned. Eleanor has four siblings, Ben, Mouse, Maisie, and the baby they call "Little Richie." Her siblings used to hate Richie, but after Eleanor got kicked out, they miraculously became on Richie's side.

One day, Eleanor got on the bus to school. Since it's her first time riding that bus, she has nowhere to sit. Everyone stares at her, partly because of her idleness, but mostly because of what she was wearing. Anyway, the bus driver got pissed of so he shouted "Get down!" and the people inside the bus started laughing. Park got pissed off at the new girl too, so he just told her to "sit the fuck down." Eleanor got surprised, but she sat down beside Park quietly.

This seating arrangement became permanent, and as the weeks passed by, Eleanor found herself subconsciously reading along with Park whenever he brought comic books. Park noticed this, so the next day, he brought a handful of comic books and laid them down on Eleanor's seat just before they went to her stop. Eventually, the comic books evolved into mix tapes, and Eleanor found herself loving Park's music tastes. Park also noticed that Eleanor always wore the same kinds of clothes-- baggy, masculine clothes. They started to notice more and more things abotu each other, and that was when their romance started to bloom.

The dual points of view really made the story a lot better. You could see into Eleanor's mind, and as well as Park's. You could see how Park made Eleanor feel all-so-mushy inside, and you could also see how Park was so proud of his Eleanor.

They have things in common, yes, but they have more differences than similarities. For one, Park's home is a quiet and peaceful home. His parents love each other so much, and he has a nice relationship with his brother, Josh.On the other hand, Eleanor's home is a home of havoc and wreck. Eleanor's mom remarried a man who became an abusive stepdad. Her stepdad, Richie, treats Eleanor like trash, and her mom actually lets Richie do all those bullying. She lets Richie get away with it not because she also treats Eleanor like garbage, but because she's too scared to oppose Richie. Park doesn't know about Eleanor's home because Eleanor never wants to talk about it. But, Park soon realized what sort of life Eleanor was leading.

This love story is by far my favorite one. I don't know, but I was really moved by their story. The ending was heartbreaking as hell, but it was also the kind of ending that would just make you smile through tears. All in all, this book was very, very wonderful and I would never regret that I spent Php425 just to buy it. (Come on, that's like a week's allowance!)

Me after reading the book:

I hope you enjoy reading Eleanor and Park as much as I enjoyed reading it. ~
