Anime Review #3: No Game No Life

No Game No Life

adapted from No Game No Life by Kamiya Yuu

The story of No Game, No Life centers around Sora and Shiro, a brother and sister whose reputations as brilliant NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) hikikomori (shut-in) gamers have spawned urban legends all over the Internet. These two gamers even consider the real world as just another "crappy game." One day, they are summoned by a boy named "God" to an alternate world. There, God has prohibited war and declared this to be a world where "everything is decided by games"—even national borders. Humanity has been driven back into one remaining city by the other races. Will Sora and Shiro, the good-for-nothing brother and sister, become the "Saviors of Humanity" on this alternate world? "Well, let's start playing."

The Review

The Story: 4/5
  • Basically, No Game No Life is about two step-siblings who have inhuman intelligence who were transported into another world. These two are named Sora (boy) and Shiro (girl.) Sora and Shiro are very bored with the real life so they just spend their time playing video games. Together, they form [ ] or more commonly known as "Blank." Blank is a group of players who always win video games. People actually think that they're cheating, but they're not. They also keep their identities hidden. Both of them are NEETs (not in school and no work) and they're orphans. One day, they receive a suspicious e-mail saying something like "Are you two tired yet? Click this link blablabla" so of course they got alarmed. Who knew that there were two people playing Blank? So they clicked the link and that link took them to an online chess game. Shiro, being the girl version of Einstein, beat whoever it was that was playing on the other side. After Shiro beat him, Tet, the god of games, transported them to a world where everything was decided through games. The people in that world have to abide by 10 rules, which is sort of similar to the 10 Commandments. In that world, there were 16 races, just like chess.
  • At first, this anime looks a lot like your typical people-transported-into-a-gaming-world anime like Sword Art Online.
  • There are a lot of unexplained things in season 1. For one, what happened to their parents? Don't they have any other relatives? And a lot more. (-1)
The Characters: 3/5
  • Sora and Shiro both have near-impossible intelligence. (-1)
  • There wasn't much character developments. (I'm not going to subtract points from this, because I think that's normal?)
  • Sora. He's perverted as hell, and his character seems to revolve around his sexual desires. He's 18, a virgin, (yes, it was mentioned in the anime) and he's a NEET. Anyway, he's still a handsome guy for me. (Yes, I just had to put it there.) He has a sister complex. I don't really know how to describe Sora so let's just go on to Shiro.
  • Shiro. She's younger than Sora. She's 11, I think? So yes. She's more intelligent than Sora. Her superhuman intelligence made her look like a freak, and that's why she was sent off to an orphanage. After a while, a family adopted her and she became Sora's step-sister. She also has a brother complex, she can't be more than 10 meters apart from Sora, and that's why she doesn't want to take baths. According to her, if she's gonna take a bath, Sora has to be with her which will make him see things that aren't supposed to be seen, and that would be considered "child porn."
  • Stephanie Dola. I somehow pity her, because it's like every minute, she has to lose some of her clothing or idk just to satisfy Sora? Her boobs are also always exposed, and she's always seen as a stupid character. I think she deserves more than that. (-1) So yeah, she's the granddaughter of the previous king, which makes her somewhat like a princess. To be honest, I think that her role didn't give much of a progression to the story. She's just there to give the siblings a place to stay, and a chance to become rulers of that world.
  • Jibril. She's a flugel, a magical creature who focuses on knowledge. She is challenged to materialization shiritori, and of course, [ ] won. Because [ ] won, Jibril has to be Sora and Shiro's slave. Sora and Shiro didn't really treat her as a slave. They treated her more like a friend, and that's what I appreciated.
  • Kurami Zell. At first, you're going to be really annoyed by her because she was cheating on a match that would determine if she has the intelligence to be a queen. After a while, you're going to realize her true worth because she's going to realize her mistakes, change for the better, and that's somewhat of a character development for me.
  • Fil. An elf, from another race. She's helping Kurami even though they are from different races because she treats her as a friend. That's one heck of a good characteristic because people from a certain kind of race treat people from another race as bullcrap. All in all, she's a very lovely character.
The Art: 5/5
  • The art is really fluid, and I must give Mad House a two thumbs-up. ^^
  • The backgrounds are amazing, and everything is just so sugoi!!
Sound: 5/5
  • The sound effects are really appropriate for that kind of scene.
  • The OST, especially the opening theme, is very catchy. It starts of as a dramatic piano tune, and then boom it becomes lively. Sugoi.
Overall: 4/5

Recommendations:
  • Sword Art Online: both of the animes have main characters who are transported to a gaming world. :)

  • Elfen Lied. it is nothing like No Game No Life, but if you would like another anime that falls into the ecchi genre, who also happens to have a nice plot, then Elfen Lied is for you. ;)

Enjoy! :D
